Highlights van Antarctica

Antarctica is als reisbestemming compleet anders dan andere plekken op deze lijst: er wonen geen vaste bewoners, er is geen infrastructuur zoals wegen of steden, en het continent wordt niet bestuurd als een land maar valt onder het internationale Antarctica-verdrag. Toch weet het al decennia reizigers te fascineren met zijn overweldigende, ongerepte natuur. De meeste bezoekers arriveren per expeditieschip, doorgaans vanuit Ushuaia in Argentina, en varen de beruchte Drakepassage over naar het Antarctisch Schiereiland. Wat daar wacht is adembenemend: reusachtige ijsbergen, gletsjers die rechtstreeks de zee in kalven, en enorme kolonies pinguïns, zeehonden en walvissen die zich nauwelijks storen aan de aanwezigheid van mensen. Het is een bestemming voor reizigers die op zoek zijn naar iets fundamenteel anders dan een strand- of stedentrip: pure wildernis, stilte en een gevoel van afgelegenheid dat nergens anders ter wereld te vinden is. De reis is niet goedkoop en vergt enige fysieke en mentale flexibiliteit – weer en ijsomstandigheden bepalen het programma, niet de reiziger – maar wie eenmaal voet aan wal heeft gezet op dit zevende continent, vergeet dat zelden. Geschikt voor natuurliefhebbers, fotografen en avontuurlijke reizigers, minder voor wie comfort en een strak schema vooropstelt.

About this Destination
The storm-tossed Southern Ocean and the inhospitable landscape of Antarctica combine to form one of the last true wildernesses on earth.
