Kazachstan mag dan qua omvang het negende land ter wereld zijn, het was tot voor kort vooral heel erg onbekend. De trouwe sovjetrepubliek, ingeklemd tussen Rusland, China en de islamitische wereld, kreeg de onafhankelijkheid in de schoot geworpen toen de Sovjet-Unie in 1991 ophield te bestaan. Sinds de tweede helft van de jaren negentig staat Kazachstan bekend als een belangrijke
olie- en gasproducent, met een exploderende economie.
Dat heeft geleid tot een nieuw zelfbewustzijn bij de machthebbers, die weinig op hebben met ‘westerse recepten’ voor democratie of een vrije markt. De olieboom heeft grote verwachtingen gewekt bij de bevolking. Vooralsnog groeit de kloof tussen arm en rijk, tussen modern en traditioneel. Het contrast tussen het moderne en kosmopolitische centrum van de economische hoofdstad Almaty, de bouwwoede in de nieuwe hoofdstad Astana en de rest van het land is groot.
