In het najaar van 2003 maakte Roger Bunnens een veertiendaagse rondreis door Vietnam. Zoals de titel van het verhaal laat zien, begon die in Hanoi en eindigde ze in Saigon. Onderweg bezocht hij achtereenvolgens het bergachtige noorden, het centrum van het land (met Hué, Da Nang en Hoi An), en tenslotte de Mekongdelta. Bunnens zat voor deze reis acht keer in een vliegtuig, driehonderdvijftig kilometer in de trein en meer dan duizend kilometer in de bus. Wie Vietnam kent, heeft daar wel een beeld bij.
