Highlights van Malawi

Malawi staat bekend als "the warm heart of Africa", en die reputatie is verdiend: de gastvrijheid van de bevolking behoort tot de meest genoemde reiservaringen van bezoekers. Het land wordt gedomineerd door het gelijknamige Lake Malawi, het op twee na grootste meer van Afrika, met kristalhelder water, witte stranden en een ongekende diversiteit aan kleurrijke cichliden die het populair maken bij duikers en snorkelaars. Naast het meer biedt Malawi verrassend veel variatie op een klein oppervlak: de bergachtige Nyika- en Zomba-plateaus, safariparken zoals Liwonde met olifanten en nijlpaarden, en groene theeplantages in het zuiden. Malawi is minder bekend en minder toeristisch dan buurlanden als Tanzania of Zuid-Afrika, wat het aantrekkelijk maakt voor reizigers die een authentiekere, rustigere kennismaking met zuidelijk Afrika zoeken. De combinatie van meer, safari en bergen op relatief korte afstanden van elkaar maakt Malawi bovendien praktisch te combineren binnen één reis. Het is een geschikte bestemming voor zowel actieve reizigers als voor wie vooral tot rust wil komen aan het water.

Both of these countries are unique ITMB titles. Malawi sells quite well, and always has. Mozambique is an interesting country that I explored several times while living in then-Rhodesia. Its infrastructure has suffered since independence, but Beira and the parks east of Malawi are quite good. The northern part of the country is largely undeveloped, unlike Malawi, where one of the treats of the country is Livingstonia, on a plateau overlooking Lake Malawi, where David Livingstone founded his mission and built a town of Scottish stone buildings. It has to be seen to be believed!
